Strings of code. Mr. Kalelkar said he has become \u201ca little more passive-aggressive,\u201d warning help-seekers, \u201cDon\u2019t come to me, go to Google first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/finance-pros-say-youll-have-to-pry-excel-out-of-their-cold-dead-hands-1512060?mod=article_inline\">Excel buffs<\/a>\u00a0are looking to lower their profiles. Since its introduction in 1985 by Microsoft Corp., the spreadsheet program has grown to hundreds of millions of users world-wide. It has\u00a0<a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/stop-using-excel-finance-chiefs-tell-staffs-1511346601?mod=article_inline\">simplified countless office tasks<\/a>\u00a0once done by hand or by rudimentary computer programs, streamlining the work of anyone needing to balance a budget, draw a graph or crunch company earnings. It may be worth faking your own death, in extreme circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The few Excel sheets in question, during one recent encounter, turned out to have 400 columns each, replete with mismatched terms and other coding no-nos, said Mr. Althouse, who works at the University of Pittsburgh. The project took weeks to straighten out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s just say that was a poor use of time,\u201d he said. He advises altruistic Excel mavens to \u201cfigure out what you\u2019re getting into\u201d before offering to lend a hand.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s Jared Spataro, a corporate vice president for Office and Windows marketing, wrote in a recent blog post that \u201cExcel\u2019s power comes from its simplicity,\u201d calling it \u201can incredibly flexible app.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A company spokeswoman said the program has recently added artificial intelligence features that are \u201copening up new possibilities for all users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, years of dealing with colleagues\u2019 Excel emergencies have taught John Mechalas to keep his mastery of spreadsheets a secret.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble often starts with a group email asking if there is anyone who knows Excel really well, said Mr. Mechalas, a 48-year-old software engineer at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/quotes.wsj.com\/INTC\">Intel<\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"company-name-type\">Corp.<\/span>\u00a0in Hillsboro, Ore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople say, \u2019Oh, this is just a really quick thing,\u2019 \u201d he said. \u201cThen I look at it, and it\u2019s not a quick thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object\n        type-InsetMediaIllustration\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetMediaIllustration\n            article__inset--inline\n   inline\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object-image enlarge-image renoImageFormat-G img-inline article__inset__image\">\n<div class=\"image-container  responsive-media article__inset__image__image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Microsoft Excel\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/si.wsj.net\/public\/resources\/images\/B3-BY877_201810_G_20181004165313.gif?w=1020&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Microsoft Excel\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-caption article__inset__image__caption\"><span class=\"wsj-article-caption-content\">Microsoft Excel<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wsj-article-credit\"><span class=\"wsj-article-credit-tag\">PHOTO:\u00a0<\/span>MICROSOFT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>These days, Mr. Mechalas will lie low until someone has a dire need before offering his expertise. People who keep bothering him get their instant messages ignored.<\/p>\n<p>As an Excel expert, \u201cyou become indispensable, and that\u2019s a double-edged sword,\u201d Mr. McIllece said.<\/p>\n<p>Jen Lipschitz, a 32-year-old data analyst and project manager from Quincy, Mass., says colleagues often turn to her and the rest of her department for help with their Excel travails.<\/p>\n<p>People say, \u201c \u2018This is Jen, she\u2019s in the smart department,\u2019 \u201d Ms. Lipschitz said. \u201cIf they can\u2019t figure out why the data is being weird, they\u2019ll just go ask Jen down the hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Lipschitz\u2019s solution: \u201cI\u2019ll just stand there,\u201d she said.
