Last year, Molson Coors purchased a minority stake of Bhakti Inc., a Boulder, Colorado-based maker of ready-to-drink chai tea.<\/p>\n<p>Those moves are aimed at providing Molson Coors\u2019 U.S. distributors with beverage options that \u201cdon\u2019t compete with beer,\u201d the spokesman added.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly Kombucha, founded by Alison Zarrow and Caleb Cargle in 2009, will be integrated into Tenth and Blake, the craft and import division of Molson Coors\u2019 U.S. division, MillerCoors. The company produces six SKUs of organic kombucha, as well as a line of fermented botanical drinks available in five flavors called C-Botanicals, and is distributed primarily on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKombucha is obviously a fast-growing category that we think is gaining steam,\u201d Tenth and Blake president Pete Marino told BevNET. \u201cIt\u2019s something that we think has a lot of staying power behind it. Clearly Kombucha makes terrific products, so it\u2019s about as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zarrow and Cargle will remain with the brand, reporting to interim general manager Maria del Rio, a member of Molson Coors\u2019 Denver-based global innovation team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is putting forth the plan and working in collaboration with myself and other people in the business to make sure we\u2019ve got the best plan to make sure we are growing Clearly Kombucha smartly,\u201d Marino said.<\/p>\n<p>MillerCoors would look to integrate Clearly Kombucha into its distribution network \u201cas much as we can,\u201d Marino said, adding that the company plans to expand the brand beyond its current distribution footprint. However, individual beer distributors will have the opportunity to make the final decision about whether they want to carry the brand.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly Kombucha did not immediately respond to BevNET\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted to its Facebook and Instagram pages, Clearly Kombucha described the deal with Molson Coors as a \u201cpartnership\u201d that would enable it to \u201cgrow the CK brand in exciting ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRest assured we will remain heavily involved in the business, crafting authentic fermented beverages while leveraging new and exciting expertise in developing great flavors, innovation, and amplifying our portfolio of products to provide more options to more people in more places,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition follows a broader movement toward non-beer investments from larger brewing companies.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Anheuser-Busch purchased natural energy drink and organic soda maker Hiball Inc. for an undisclosed sum. In 2016, A-B also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brewbound.com\/news\/anheuser-busch-starbucks-partner-produce-rtd-teavana-tea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forged a partnership<\/a>\u00a0with Starbucks to manufacture and distribute a ready-to-drink bottled tea under the Teavana brand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brewbound.com\/news\/anheuser-buschs-zx-ventures-acquires-uk-based-spirits-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZX Ventures<\/a>, A-B\u2019s \u201cglobal disruptive growth group,\u201d has also negotiated a variety of non-traditional deals in recent years. Those investments include Kombrewcha, a slightly alcoholic organic tea;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brewbound.com\/news\/zx-ventures-funds-development-new-non-alcoholic-beverage-made-spent-grain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canvas<\/a>, a non-alcoholic drink made from spent grain; and Owl\u2019s Brew, which makes tea-based cocktail mixers and a tea-and-beer Radler line.<\/p>\n<p>Constellation Brands, meanwhile,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brewbound.com\/news\/constellation-brands-makes-191-million-investment-marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent $191 million<\/a>\u00a0last October to acquire a 9.9 percent stake Canada\u2019s Canopy Growth Corporation, a cannabis company that is looking to develop a line of THC-infused beverages.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, the Molson Coors spokesman added that TAP Ventures \u201clooks across the beverage industry\u201d for opportunities where it can leverage it \u201cbranding, brewing and distribution expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, we are interested in investing in beverage companies where the product is brewed, fermented or distilled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Molson Coors\u00a0today announced\u00a0the acquisition of California-based Clearly Kombucha, marking the multinational brewing company\u2019s first purchase of a non-alcoholic beverage brand.
